Stretch marks occur when the skin stretches very quickly, thus causing breakage and tearing of the elastic fibers deeper in the dermis.
When the one fibers break then the fibers along each side of it have more pressure on them and then they break. Causing chain reaction that creates a line in the skin called stretch marks, these elastic fibers are in the deep layer of the skin called the dermis.
The dermis is covered on the outside by the epidermis. This skin layer is not where the stretch marks occur. They start in the deeper layer of the dermis. This explains why studies performed on creams and lotions applied externally alone don't show any significant benefit.
